Andrew Layton Schlafly is an American attorney and conservative activist, best known for founding and maintaining the wiki encyclopedia Conservapedia, created as a counterweight to what he perceived as liberal bias in other online projects. He holds a degree in electrical engineering from Princeton and a law degree from Harvard; before pursuing a legal career he worked as a device physicist and microelectronics engineer, later joining large law firms and practicing in private practice. In the legal field, Schlafly led litigation-oriented initiatives with a conservative orientation: he served as general counsel for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and was lead counsel in legal efforts opposing U.S. health-care reform, as well as representing Tea Party groups in attempts to remove legislators through recall campaigns. He also led the Schlafly family’s legal dispute over the use of the "Schlafly" trademark by a brewery. His work with Conservapedia and other public initiatives generated wide academic and media controversy, due to skeptical stances toward scientific consensuses and criticism over publishing content considered disinformation on topics such as evolution, vaccines, and climate change. Schlafly’s legacy is marked by digital conservative activism and efforts to develop communicative and legal alternatives to what he views as an adverse cultural hegemony.
