Anne MacKaye Chapman was a Franco‑American ethnologist known for her ethnographic research in Mesoamerica and the Cape Horn region. Trained at the Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico and holding a doctorate from Columbia University, she carried out extensive fieldwork among Maya groups, the Tolupan (Jicaque), and the Lenca of Honduras, producing analyses of social organization, oral tradition, and ritual that contributed to debates about the cultural inclusion of the region within Mesoamerica. Beginning in the 1960s she also worked intensively with the Fuegian peoples of Tierra del Fuego — the Selkʼnam (Onas) and the Yahgan — recording songs, memories, and rituals in a context of rapid change. She published books and films documenting initiation ceremonies, cosmologies, and oral histories, including major works on the Selkʼnam and the Yahgan, and issued original recordings of traditional songs. Over the course of her career she was affiliated with institutions such as the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and the Musée de l'Homme, and collaborated with centers in Latin America and the United States. Her legacy combines detailed ethnography, audiovisual production, and the preservation of languages and cultural practices now rare, leaving a lasting contribution to South American and Mesoamerican indigenous studies.
