Annie Sprinkle, born Ellen F. Steinberg, is an American performance artist, sex educator and filmmaker whose career spans sex work, adult cinema and activist art. She became known for producing feminist and queer pornography, pioneering genres such as edu‑porn, post‑porn and erotic art, and for starring in and directing films and performances that place female pleasure at the center of the discourse. Holding a doctorate in human sexuality, Sprinkle combined practice and theory across decades: she taught workshops, developed courses on pleasure and genitals, and presented controversial performance projects — such as the Public Cervix Announcement — which invited public examination of the female body as an educational and political act. Her work also includes instructional video clips and documentaries about sexuality. Together with her partner Beth Stephens, she helped create the ecosexual movement, blending art, environmental activism and sexual identity in the Ecosex Manifesto. Her work is taught in university courses in theater, gender studies and film, and contributed to broadening public debate on sex, feminism and sex workers’ rights.
