Anthony McLeod Kennedy is an American lawyer and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1988 until his retirement in 2018. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the Senate in a unanimous vote, Kennedy was notable for his work on the Court over three decades, during which he often cast the decisive vote on sensitive social and constitutional issues. Before the Supreme Court, he practiced law in Sacramento and was appointed in 1975 to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit by President Gerald Ford. His professional career reflects a deep legal education — including a degree from Harvard Law School — and practical experience both in private practice and on the federal bench. Within the institution, Kennedy became the Court’s senior associate justice after Antonin Scalia’s death in 2016 and retired on July 31, 2018, leaving the seat to be filled by Brett Kavanaugh. His legacy is frequently linked to landmark decisions on individual rights and to the moderating influence he exercised on the Court’s ideological balance.
