David Essex (born David Albert Cook) is an English singer, songwriter and actor whose career rose to prominence in the 1970s. As a pop/rock performer he placed nineteen singles and sixteen albums in the UK Top 40 between 1973 and 1994, with standout hits such as "Rock On"—his biggest international success—as well as the number ones "Gonna Make You a Star" and "Hold Me Close." His image as a teen idol made him a central figure in British pop culture of the decade. Alongside his music career he built a strong presence in theatre and film. He was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer for That'll Be the Day (1973) and received a Laurence Olivier nomination for his performance in Evita (1978). He also took part in popular projects such as the musical version of The War of the Worlds (1978) and films connected to the era's music scene. Over the following decades he remained active across several areas: regular tours, West End productions, television work and music production, in addition to publishing an autobiography and greatest-hits compilations. Recognized for his volunteer work, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1999. His career is notable for versatility across stage, studio and screen and for a long-standing presence in the British music industry.
