Anthony Blunt was a prominent British art historian who also became known for being exposed as a Soviet spy. He held leading positions in academic and museum life: he was Professor of the History of Art at the University of London, director of the Courtauld Institute of Art, and Surveyor of the Queen's Pictures, a role that placed him at the center of the curation of the royal collections. His 1967 monograph on the French painter Nicolas Poussin is regarded as a milestone in studies of French Baroque art, and his textbook Art and Architecture in France 1500–1700 remained a standard reference for decades. These works established his reputation as an authority on European art of the 16th and 17th centuries. Alongside his academic career, Blunt was a member of the group known as the Cambridge Five and, during World War II, passed intelligence to the Soviets—an activity he admitted in 1964 under immunity. The public revelation of his espionage ties, announced in 1979, led to the revocation of his honours and indelibly marked his public image. Blunt’s legacy is ambivalent: he remained influential in art studies through his publications and teaching, while his political biography provoked intense debate about ethics, loyalty, and the boundaries between intellectual life and clandestine action.
