Anton Adriaan Mussert was a Dutch politician, cofounder and leader of the National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands (NSB) from 1931. Known as the most prominent figure of Dutch National Socialism before and during World War II, Mussert sought to adapt authoritarian and expansionist ideas—such as the advocacy of a “Greater Netherlands”—to the Dutch political context. When Germany invaded in 1940, Mussert collaborated with the occupying authorities and in 1942 received the nominal title Leider van het Nederlandse Volk, though he held little real power. During the occupation, the NSB and associated militias took part in the collaborationist effort, including creating and overseeing units that served alongside German forces on the Eastern Front. After Germany’s surrender, Mussert was arrested, tried and convicted of treason. Sentenced to death, he was executed in May 1946. His legacy is defined by collaboration with the Nazi regime and the severe consequences of occupation for Dutch society; he is remembered as a symbol of national betrayal and repression during that period.
