Anton von Webern

Anton von Webern was an Austrian composer associated with the Second Viennese School and the dodecaphonic and serial innovations that shaped twentieth‑century music. Trained in Vienna, he studied musicology and composition with Guido Adler and Arnold Schönberg, presenting his Passacaglia op. 1 in 1908 as a graduation work. His output, concise and concentrated, was notable for rhythmic, timbral, and dynamic experiments that influenced subsequent generations.

In addition to composing, Webern worked as a conductor in several European cities and led the Vienna Workers’ Symphony Orchestra between 1922 and 1934. His production ranges from chamber pieces and songs to concertos and cantatas, with key works such as the Six Pieces for Large Orchestra op. 6 and the Variations for Orchestra op. 30, which demonstrate his economical language and formal rigor.

His life ended tragically in 1945 during the postwar unrest. Webern left a lasting legacy: his precise handling of sound and emphasis on economy of material were fundamental to the development of serialism and remain a reference for contemporary composers and performers.
