Antonio Villaraigosa is an American politician of the Democratic Party, best known for serving as the 41st mayor of Los Angeles from 2005 to 2013. Prior to that, he was prominent in state politics as majority leader and later as speaker of the California State Assembly, where he served from 1994 to 2000. His career also includes service on metropolitan boards and on the Los Angeles City Council. As mayor, Villaraigosa prioritized investments in transportation and infrastructure: he was a leading architect of the passage of Measure R, a half‑cent sales tax that directed billions to mobility projects, and he advocated for the extension of the D Line (known as the “Subway to the Sea”). He also launched initiatives to expand bike lanes, increase police staffing, and reform public schools through the Mayor’s Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. His tenure drew controversies and criticism, including investigations into campaign financing, a public dispute over control of the school district, and questions about the fulfillment of promises such as hiring a thousand police officers. In the years after his mayoralty, he remained active in state politics and announced bids for the governorship of California.
