Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was a composer and violin virtuoso of the late Baroque period, born in the Republic of Venice. Trained as a priest, he became known as il Prete Rosso and distinguished himself both as a performer and as a teacher at the Ospedale della Pietà, an institution for orphaned girls where he produced much of his music and held musical-director posts. Author of about 770 works — including concertos, operas and sacred music — Vivaldi was especially innovative in the concerto genre, emphasizing the strings and a strongly expressive language. His music reached a wide audience through publications such as L’estro armonico (Op. 3) and Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione (Op. 8); from the latter came the famous concertos The Four Seasons, which made him famous beyond Italy. His music circulated throughout Europe and influenced contemporaries and successors; adaptations and transcriptions of Vivaldi’s passages, including by Bach, attest to his impact. In his final years he suffered a decline in prestige in Venice and financial difficulties, and he died in Vienna. Today he is recognized as a central figure of the Italian Baroque, whose legacy remains highly relevant in the concert repertoire.
