April Ashley MBE was a British model, actress, author and activist who became one of the United Kingdom’s first public figures to undergo gender-affirming surgery. After an early career in Paris cabarets under the name Toni April, she rose to prominence as a model for British Vogue and appeared in films, becoming nationally notorious when the press exposed her status as a trans woman in 1961.
Her marriage to Arthur Corbett led to the legal case Corbett v Corbett, which resulted in the annulment of the marriage and had legal and social repercussions for the recognition of trans people in the country. Throughout her life, Ashley recounted her experiences in autobiographies and was the subject of biographies and exhibitions, remaining an important voice in public debate about transgender rights.
Recognized for her work for equality, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2012 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Liverpool. Her story appears in archives, exhibitions and portrait collections, securing a legacy as a visible pioneer in the struggle for rights and visibility of the trans community in the United Kingdom.
