Maria Anna of Austria (1770–1809) was an Austrian archduchess, daughter of Emperor Leopold II and Maria Luisa of Spain. Born in Florence during her father’s tenure as Grand Duke of Tuscany, she belonged to the younger generation of the Habsburg dynasty and received a domestic education that was less ceremonial than typical at court, marked by a simpler life and greater closeness to her parents.
In 1791 she became abbess of the Teresian Convent in Prague, a post that signaled her commitment to religious life and to the elite female ecclesiastical milieu of the eighteenth century. The position reflected both her dynastic rank and the common practice of assigning royal women to prestigious religious roles.
She died in Neudorf, Arad, in 1809 at the age of 39. Her legacy is chiefly visible in the institutional history of the Teresian convent and in the imperial memory: in 1841 Emperor Ferdinand I ordered a Carrara marble funerary plaque erected in her honor.
