Caroline of Austria-Tuscany was an archduchess of the Habsburg-Lorraine branch, known for her ties to the European royal houses of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A granddaughter of Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany and of King Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies, she was notable for her social position and dynastic connections that linked her to the courts of Austria, Hungary and Tuscany. In 1894 she married Prince August Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Braganza, joining the branch that maintained ties to the Brazilian Imperial Family; the marriage produced eight children, whose lives reflected the upheavals of the century, including victims of Nazi policies and members scattered across Europe. Before her marriage she briefly served as princess-abbess at the Convent of Saint Teresa of the Nobles in Prague Castle. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the family moved among noble estates such as Gerasdorf and Schladming; widowed in 1922, Caroline relocated to Budapest and relinquished imperial styles to live there. She died in May 1945 and received final burial at Farkashréti Cemetery only in 1967. Her legacy is chiefly dynastic, representing the continuity and dispersion of European royal families in the early decades of the 20th century.
