John Milton Cage Jr. was an American composer, music theorist, and artist recognized as a central figure in the postwar avant-garde. A pioneer of aleatory and electroacoustic music, he became known for unconventional use of instruments — including the prepared piano — and for incorporating everyday sounds and silence as musical material. His best-known work, 4'33", exemplifies the idea that the sonic environment and the audience’s participation are part of the piece, shifting the composer’s role and proposing a participatory experience. Asian influences, especially Zen Buddhism and the I Ching, guided his compositional processes of indeterminacy and chance from the 1940s onward. Cage collaborated closely with choreographer Merce Cunningham and played a key role in the Fluxus movement, blurring the boundaries between music, poetry, and visual arts. His exploration of new modes of listening and his elevation of noise and silence left a lasting impact on experimental practice, electronic music, and performance art in the twentieth century.
