Archduke of Austria and member of the House of Habsburg, Karl Stephan (1860–1933) was notable as a naval officer and a prominent dynastic figure at the end of the Austro‑Hungarian Empire. He began his naval career in 1879, retired from active service in 1896, but continued to rise in rank until receiving the honorary title of Großadmiral in 1911 and serving as inspector of the navy. During the First World War he led inquiries into mutinies and recommended reorganizations that helped bring Miklós Horthy to the post of commander‑in‑chief. As owner of extensive estates in Galicia, including business interests connected to Żywiec, and owner of palaces in Pula, Lošinj and Vienna, Karl Stephan played a significant regional social and economic role. He was also a sailing enthusiast, a member of British regatta associations and owner of well‑known yachts. With family ties to the Polish aristocracy — two daughters married into the Radziwiłł and Czartoryski families — and fluency in Polish, he was proposed as a possible king or regent of a projected Kingdom of Poland in 1916, a candidacy that did not materialize. After 1918 he adopted Polish citizenship and lived in Żywiec until his death, leaving a complex legacy at the intersection of dynastic diplomacy, military service and regional influence.
