Charles Pius of Austria, Prince of Tuscany, was an archduke of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine and a figure in Spanish Carlism in the 20th century. Born in Vienna in 1909, he came from a lineage that connected imperial dynasties and the Bourbons, and after his family’s exile in 1919 he spent much of his life between Italy and Spain. In the context of Spanish dynastic disputes, he was acclaimed by a sector of traditionalists as a Carlist claimant, proclaiming himself the legitimate heir in 1943; this movement became known as Carloctavismo. Although he had brothers with dynastic rights, it was Charles Pius who publicly asserted the claim and received support from a segment of Catholic traditionalism. In 1938 he entered a morganatic marriage with Christa Satzger de Bálványos, a union that excluded his descendants from the dynastic line of succession. He died in Barcelona in 1953 of a cerebral hemorrhage and was buried at the Poblet Monastery. Historically, his role is chiefly as the representative of a legitimist branch of Carlism, with a legacy largely confined to monarchist circles and studies of 20th‑century dynastic alternatives in Spain.
