Archbishop? No — the title is wrong: this is Ferdinando Salvatore Maria Giuseppe, known as Ferdinand IV, the last Grand Duke of Tuscany. Born into the Habsburg-Lorraine family, he was a son of Leopold II and played a central role in the political struggles of Italian unification, formally assuming the Tuscan throne after his father’s abdication in 1859, although he was never crowned nor actually governed.

During the Risorgimento, Ferdinand represented the legitimist resistance: he funded newspapers and organized an autonomist party that sought to safeguard dynastic rights and promote a federal solution for the new Italian state. After the plebiscite for annexation to Sardinia and the collapse of hopes for restoration, his political position disintegrated; the Austrian Empire went on to recognize the Kingdom of Italy, and Ferdinand lost any chance of returning to power.

He withdrew from politics and lived under the guardianship of the Austrian Imperial House; in 1870 he formally renounced his rights to the Grand Duchy. Although he retained certain honorary prerogatives for a time—such as the ability to grant some dynastic orders—his legacy is defined by his status as the last titular sovereign of Tuscany and by the inadvertent role he played in the transformations of nineteenth‑century Italy.
