Ariela Barer is an American actress and filmmaker whose career spans television and independent film. She became known for playing Gert Yorkes on the Marvel’s Runaways series (Hulu) and held recurring roles on shows such as One Day at a Time, Atypical and the reboot of Saved by the Bell. In film, she has appeared in festival titles such as Ladyworld (Toronto, 2018).
Barer moved from acting into writing and producing when she co-wrote, starred in and produced How to Blow Up a Pipeline (2023), an adaptation of Andreas Malm’s book that premiered in competition at the Toronto International Film Festival and was distributed by Neon. The film received broad critical recognition, appearing on year-end lists and earning strong scores on review aggregators.
More recently, Barer joined the regular cast of The Last of Us (HBO), with critics citing her performance as one of the season’s highlights. Beyond screen work, she fronted the punk band The Love-Inns and remains active in projects that cross the festival film circuit and contemporary television.
Born in Los Angeles to Mexican parents, Barer is also publicly known to identify as queer, a facet often present in her public and artistic visibility.
