Arnaldo Forlani was a prominent postwar Italian politician associated with the right wing of the Christian Democracy (DC). Elected to Parliament in multiple terms, he held central roles in government and in the party: secretary‑general of the DC on two occasions, minister of Defence and of Foreign Affairs, deputy prime minister and, from 1980 to 1981, prime minister of Italy.
During his brief tenure as head of government, Forlani had to confront the Irpinia earthquake catastrophe and the Propaganda Due (P2) scandal, whose disclosure of members and ties weakened his political base and prompted his resignation. He was also one of the architects of the Pentapartito, the five‑party coalition that dominated Italian politics in the 1980s.
An influential figure among DC leaders between the 1970s and 1990s, Forlani played a significant role in coalition negotiations and in the country’s pro‑European foreign policy. His political career declined in the face of the investigations and scandals of the early 1990s that shook Italy’s party system and ended his public life.
