Arne Dekke Eide Næss was a Norwegian philosopher and environmentalist, known for formulating the concept of deep ecology, which proposes an ethical view of the human relationship with nature and regards biodiversity as intrinsic to the balance of the biosphere. An influential thinker in the late‑20th‑century environmental movement, Næss drew a distinction between a “shallow” ecological thought, oriented toward pragmatic utility, and a “deep” approach that seeks to address the philosophical and cultural roots of the environmental crisis. Graduating in philosophy in 1933 and an early faculty member at the University of Oslo, Næss combined theoretical reflection with activism: he drew inspiration from works such as Silent Spring and from Gandhian principles of nonviolence, taking part in direct actions to defend the environment. His work spans studies in semantics, epistemology, and ethics, as well as texts that systematize deep ecology and argue for ways of life compatible with sustainability. He published influential books and articles, including Ecology, Community and Lifestyle, and sustained a long academic and public output that established his reputation as one of the central voices of modern environmental philosophy. His legacy endures in contemporary debates about environmental values and alternative ways of living with the natural world.
