Arnold Aletrino was a Dutch physician, criminal anthropologist and writer, known for his studies and publications on homosexuality in Dutch and French. Trained in medicine, he worked in Amsterdam—serving, among others, members of the fire brigade—and was part of the literary circle of the Tachtigers, a movement that criticized the dominant Victorian models in nineteenth-century prose and poetry.
A student of Cesare Lombroso, Aletrino later disagreed with his teacher by arguing that homosexuality could occur in healthy, normal individuals, a position he set out in a 1897 article. He became active in public and scientific debates about tolerance, taking part in the Fifth International Congress of Criminal Anthropology in Amsterdam in 1901 and contributing in 1912 to the Dutch branch of Magnus Hirschfeld’s Scientific-Humanitarian Committee.
His literary output included novels and short stories published between 1889 and 1906, which had limited critical impact, but his public legacy is chiefly his scientific activism in favor of a more understanding attitude and against the criminalization and stigmatization of homosexual people.
