Arnold Johannes Wilhelm Sommerfeld was a German theoretical physicist whose work in the early twentieth century was decisive for establishing mathematical physics and for the development of quantum theory. A pioneer in atomic physics, he introduced key concepts such as the azimuthal and magnetic quantum numbers and the fine-structure constant, and he contributed to the theory of X-ray waves. His work also included the systematization of partial differential equations applied to physics and the publication of the extensive lecture series Lessons in Theoretical Physics. As a teacher and advisor at universities including Göttingen, Aachen and, above all, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Sommerfeld trained a generation of physicists who became central figures in modern physics. Several of his doctoral students went on to receive the Nobel Prize, and many others became distinguished researchers, cementing his reputation as a mentor and an intellectual hub. Beyond his scientific publications, Sommerfeld collaborated on influential textbooks and produced applied contributions, such as studies in hydrodynamics and lubrication problems that had technical impact. Historically, he transformed the academic practice of physics in Germany, raising theoretical physics to the status of a driving force in scientific progress.
