Jean-Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud was a French poet whose work, written essentially between the ages of fifteen and twenty, had a profound impact on Symbolism and modern poetry. Known for visionary verse and for theories about the “state of the seer” — achieving poetic perception through the deregulation of the senses — Rimbaud produced decisive texts such as Une saison en enfer and the Illuminações, which overturned aesthetic conventions and influenced subsequent generations. His public life, marked by ruptures and travels, also fed his myth: a tumultuous relationship with Paul Verlaine, episodes of bohemian excess, alcohol and scandal, and the abrupt abandonment of his literary career around the age of twenty established him as a controversial and emblematic figure of artistic modernity. After giving up writing, Rimbaud turned to commerce and long travels, working as a trader in the East and the Horn of Africa, where he dealt in coffee and arms and forged notable local contacts. Illness from joint problems that developed into cancer led him to return to France for treatment; he died in Marseille in 1891. Rimbaud’s legacy lies both in the formal innovation and imagistic force of his poems and in the archetype of the unruly artist, whose brief output remains a subject of international study and admiration.
