Arvo Pärt is an Estonian classical composer whose work renewed sacred and contemporary music at the end of the 20th century. Trained at the Tallinn Conservatory, he first gained attention for serial compositions and film scores, but faced political restrictions and suspicion during the Soviet occupation that affected his artistic and personal life.
After a prolonged creative crisis, Pärt abandoned serialism and turned to the study of Gregorian chant and Renaissance masters, culminating in the creation of the tintinnabuli technique — a minimalist style built on bell-like chords and hypnotic repetition. Works such as Für Alina, Fratres, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, Tabula rasa and Spiegel im Spiegel established his international reputation.
Exiled to the West from 1980, he lived in Vienna and Berlin before returning to Estonia. His music, strongly inspired by religion, achieved wide recognition: it is a regular presence in concerts, recordings and film soundtracks, and he has received numerous awards and honorary degrees worldwide.
