Auguste Perret

Auguste Perret was a French architect who pioneered the use of reinforced concrete as both an expressive and structural element in modern architecture. He began working early in the family firm and brought the materiality of concrete to building façades and exposed structural systems in residential and industrial projects, breaking with the tradition of concealing construction elements. Among his most notable works are the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, a landmark in the emergence of Art Déco in Paris; the church of Notre-Dame du Raincy, notable for its decorative use of concrete vaults and columns; and the Palais Iéna, built for the 1937 Exposition. Industrial and experimental projects—such as Perret’s tower in Grenoble and innovative warehouses—also illustrate his pursuit of an “order of concrete.” After World War II, Perret led the reconstruction of Le Havre’s city centre, an urban and architectural ensemble later recognized by UNESCO. He taught at the École des Beaux-Arts and received international awards, including the Royal Gold Medal and the AIA Gold Medal, leaving an important legacy in the training of architects and in the acceptance of concrete as an architectural language.
