Ave Ninchi was an Italian actress whose long career made her a recurring presence on the postwar stage, in film, and on television. Trained at the Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica, she became known as a strong supporting player: with a striking bearing and comic verve, she often "stole scenes" alongside names such as Totò, Aldo Fabrizi, and Alberto Sordi. Her versatility let her move with equal assurance between sparkling comedies and dramatic films, earning her the Nastro d’Argento for Vivere in pace (1946). On stage she worked steadily from the 1950s through the 1970s, appearing both in the popular musicals of Garinei and Giovannini and in prose repertory (Pirandello, Strindberg, Goldoni). On television and radio she became a familiar face: she took part in sceneggiati and variety shows, presented cooking programs, and hosted the historic Voi ed io on Radio Rai. In addition to an extensive filmography, she worked abroad — including in Louis Malle’s Lacombe Lucien — and lent her voice to important dubbing projects. In later decades she divided her time between the stage and media appearances, also serving as an advertising spokesperson. Public recognition included streets and other toponyms named in her honor in several Italian cities.
