B. D. Hyman is an American author and pastor, known both for her written work and for a fraught family relationship with her mother, the actress Bette Davis. She appeared on screen as a child and, as an adult, became the author of memoirs that attracted wide public attention: My Mother's Keeper (1985) and Narrow Is the Way (1987). My Mother's Keeper became a bestseller and provoked intense controversy for its depiction of the mother–daughter relationship, including allegations of alcoholism and criticism of Davis’s conduct during Hyman’s formative years.
After a period of notoriety connected to those family revelations, Hyman underwent a religious conversion: she became a born-again Christian and founded a ministry in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she serves as pastor. In that role she published books on religious themes and counseling, among them Oppressive Parents: How to Leave Them and Love Them (1992), The Church is Not the Bride (2000), and The Rapture, the Tribulation, and Beyond (2002).
Her public legacy combines the personal disclosure of her memoirs with a subsequent ministerial career; the polarization sparked by the books about her mother shaped her public image and affected both family reactions and dramatic portrayals of the story in television productions.
