Mildred Ella “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias was an American athlete noted for her versatility and excellence across multiple sports. In the 1930s she rose to prominence in track and field, setting world records and winning two gold medals and a silver at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, demonstrating a rare combination of speed, jumping and throwing ability. Before and after her Olympic peak she also competed actively in basketball, baseball/softball, diving and other amateur events. From the mid-1930s Didrikson turned her focus to golf, becoming the first major female sports celebrity in the United States, competing professionally and winning significant tournaments. Her move into golf involved controversy over amateur status and invitations to play against men in professional events, an uncommon circumstance at the time. Beyond competitive sport, she performed in public exhibitions and recordings and married wrestler George Zaharias; together they managed a golf course in Florida. Her legacy is tied to her image as a pioneer who broke gender barriers in sport and as a historical reference among the most complete athletes of the twentieth century.
