Badly Drawn Boy is the stage name of Damon Michael Gough, an English singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist associated with the indie movement. Emerging in the late 1990s through a series of home-recorded EPs and a partnership with the XL label, he achieved critical and commercial recognition with the album The Hour of Bewilderbeast (2000), which earned him the Mercury Prize and became his most emblematic work.
Over his career, Gough alternated solo albums with film work, most notably the soundtrack for About a Boy, and moved through sounds ranging from intimate folk to more accessible pop. His later releases explored personal themes such as loss and nostalgia, and included collaborations and tours in the UK and the United States.
Also known for his modest aesthetic and a charismatic stage presence, Gough maintained an independent approach for part of his career, releasing material on his own label. His legacy is that of a cult artist admired for narrative sensitivity and melodic songwriting, whose principal work remains a touchstone in the British indie scene of the 2000s.
