Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was a Bengali writer, poet, essayist and journalist, a central figure in the Bengali literary revival and a major influence across the Indian subcontinent. Trained in the arts and law, he combined a public career as a magistrate and collector with a prolific literary output, publishing fourteen novels and numerous essays, satires and critical pieces that broke with versified traditions and paved the way for modern prose in Bengali. His best-known work, Anandamath (1882), blends historical fiction and politics and inspired the hymn Vande Mataram, which he wrote in a highly Sanskritized form of Bengali and which was adopted by nationalist movements. Other milestones include Durgeshnandini (1865), regarded as one of the earliest Bengali novels, and Rajmohan’s Wife, his first fiction published in English. Chattopadhyay also worked as an editor and founded the magazine Bangadarshan, an important platform for promoting literature and social debate. He received titles and honors late in life and is remembered both for his prolific literary production and for shaping generations of Bengali writers. Although he held pro-British positions and expressed religious and communal views in some texts, his literary legacy remains central to India’s cultural history.
