Barbara Radding Morgan is a teacher and former American astronaut whose career combined education and spaceflight. She began as a classroom teacher in public and international schools, spending decades in elementary education before being selected in 1985 as the backup for the Teacher in Space program, a role she assumed publicly after the Challenger tragedy. Remaining involved with NASA’s educational initiatives, she gave lectures, advised on curricula, and participated in efforts to increase participation of women and minorities in the sciences. Twelve years after the accident, Morgan formally joined the astronaut corps as a mission specialist. In 2007 she flew on STS-118, where she operated the robotic arm and coordinated cargo transfers to the International Space Station, in addition to conducting educational radio contacts with schools and young people. That mission made her the first teacher—by professional training—to fly in space. After leaving orbit, she returned to academia as a distinguished educator at a university, directing programs in engineering and education and advocating for STEM. She received awards and had a school named in her honor, cementing a legacy focused on promoting science and space education.
