Barbara Skelton was an English writer and social figure known for memoirs, novels and short stories that reflected a life shaped by travel, scandals and relationships with powerful personalities. The daughter of an army officer and related to the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Skelton spent part of her youth in India and led a turbulent personal life that later fed her literary work. During World War II she worked at the Foreign Office and served in embassies, experience that brought her into circles of power; in Cairo she became the mistress of King Farouk, an episode that gained her public notoriety and caused tension with diplomatic authorities. In the following years she lived in several countries in Europe, the United States, Cuba and France, including lengthy periods in Paris. Author of two novels and a collection of short stories, she is best known for two substantial memoirs — Tears Before Bedtime (1987) and Weep No More (1989) — which established her reputation as a chronicler of her generation. She married prominent cultural and publishing figures such as Cyril Connolly and George Weidenfeld; her life inspired fictional characters and drew criticism from contemporaries. She died in 1996, leaving a legacy as a narrator of a life between the worldly and the literary.
