Barbara Walters was one of the most influential broadcasters in American television, a pioneer who in 1976 became the first woman to co-anchor an ABC network evening newscast. Her career covered decades in which she navigated hard news and popular television formats, establishing herself both as a host and as an executive producer. She began in television at NBC, where she spent 15 years on The Today Show, advancing from writer to co-host in 1974. In 1979 she rose to prominence on 20/20, working alongside Hugh Downs and later assuming solo anchoring duties, expanding her editorial reach and audience. Walters specialized in extended interviews, a style associated with personality journalism, and conducted conversations with heads of state and major celebrities, producing episodes of substantial media impact — including her interview with Monica Lewinsky, among the most-watched on American television. Over her career she also created themed series, such as the specials “Ten Most Fascinating People.” Recognized for opening doors for women in the media, her career drew both influence and criticism for the tone of some interviews. She announced her retirement in 2013 and died in 2022, leaving a lasting imprint on television and journalistic culture.
