Baron Georges Cuvier

Georges Cuvier was a French naturalist and zoologist at the turn of the 18th to 19th centuries, often called the father of paleontology for systematizing the study of fossils through comparative anatomy. By rigorously comparing fossil remains with living animals, he showed that mammoths and mastodons were not merely variants of living elephants, establishing that extinction occurred and allowing fossil forms to be placed within a unified classification system. His Leçons d'anatomie comparée and Recherches sur les ossemens fossiles consolidated methods that transformed museums and natural collections into research centers, and influenced generations of naturalists. Cuvier also named and described major fossil taxa such as Megatherium, Palaeotherium and Anoplotherium, and argued for the predominance of reptiles in ancient geological ages. Politically active, he held public offices and took part in educational reforms in France, and he featured in scientific debates—most notably opposing transformist ideas and engaging in controversy with Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. His work enjoyed high scientific prestige but also reflected the racial prejudices of his time; his studies and publications on skulls and the dissection of Saartjie Baartman are now criticized for those positions.
