Bart van der Leck was a Dutch painter, designer and ceramist whose career spanned the early decades of the 20th century and engaged with the Dutch avant‑garde. Trained in stained glass and decorative arts, he developed an early body of work marked by strong stylization, influenced by Symbolism and Egyptian art, which later evolved toward a radical use of simplified forms and primary colors. Connected with influential critics and collectors, he produced works for the Kröller‑Müller family and took part in the circle that gave rise to the De Stijl movement, maintaining direct contact with Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg and other leading figures. Between 1918 and 1920 he produced abstract compositions of great geometric rigor; later he returned to figuration while retaining an essential geometric vocabulary. Beyond painting, he worked on interior decoration, furniture and textiles in collaboration with names such as Gerrit Rietveld, and he was active in ceramics. His career includes large‑scale postwar projects and a critical reevaluation prompted by exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum. Van der Leck’s legacy lies in the synthesis of applied art and geometric abstraction and in the influence he exerted on Dutch modernist aesthetics.
