Beatrice Helen Worsley (known as “Trixie”) was a Canadian computing pioneer, recognized as the first woman in the country to work professionally in the field. Trained in mathematics and physics, she earned one of the earliest doctorates in computing under Douglas Hartree at Cambridge, with contributions from Alan Turing; her dissertation addressed serial programming for digital machines and became an early reference in the field. Over the course of her career, Worsley took part directly in computing’s formative milestones: she wrote the first program to run on the EDSAC, helped develop one of the first compilers for the Ferranti Mark 1 in Toronto, and produced key technical papers. In the postwar period she worked at the National Research Council and joined efforts to establish academic computing centres in Canada. As an educator, she taught computing and engineering at Queen’s University and the University of Toronto for more than two decades, training generations at the discipline’s inception. Her technical and academic work helped establish programming practices and teaching in the country, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of Canadian computing.
