Benigno Zaccagnini was a pediatrician and one of the most representative political figures of the Italian Christian Democracy in the postwar period. From Romagna, he graduated in Medicine, served as a medical officer during the Second World War and took part in the resistance as a member of the Garibaldi Brigade; that experience opened the way to public life and to his election to the Constituent Assembly in 1946. Over several decades he held continuous seats in the Chamber and the Senate, combining parliamentary and governmental roles: he served as undersecretary, Minister of Labour and then Minister of Public Works, and was president of the DC parliamentary group and vice president of the Chamber. In 1975 he became national secretary of Christian Democracy at a turbulent political moment marked by the so‑called historic compromise between the DC and the left; under his leadership the DC managed to contain the rise of the Communist Party in the 1976 elections. Known for his reputation for integrity—nicknamed “honest Zac”—Zaccagnini left a legacy of party institutionalism and social sensitivity. The kidnapping and murder of Aldo Moro decisively affected his tenure and, from 1980, he withdrew from executive posts while remaining influential as a historical reference within the DC.
