Benito Juárez was a jurist and statesman of Zapotec origin who became a central figure in the era known as La Reforma. He served five presidential terms between 1858 and 1872, becoming known for leading the resistance against the French intervention and for restoring the Republic after Maximilian’s short-lived empire. His leadership helped establish the liberal Mexican state and affirmed the primacy of civilian authority over the military. As a reformer, Juárez enacted the 1859 expropriation of Church property and sought to modernize rural life by promoting the privatization of communal lands to boost production and integrate peasants into the national economy. These measures reflected his secular, progressive vision for nineteenth-century Mexico. Born into humble circumstances and illiterate in childhood, he studied law in Oaxaca, becoming a lawyer and judge before entering politics. He served as governor of Oaxaca, minister of justice, and vice president before assuming the constitutional presidency. His rise—from rural labor to head of state—symbolizes social mobility and resistance to foreign intervention. Juárez left a lasting imprint on Mexican political culture: he is remembered as the first president of indigenous origin to govern the modern nation and as one of the principal architects of the nineteenth-century liberal Republic.
