Benjamin McLane Spock was an American pediatrician whose work changed public views on childrearing in the twentieth century. His book Baby and Child Care (1946) became a publishing phenomenon, influencing generations by advocating a more affectionate, individualized approach to children; it sold tens of millions of copies across its editions and revisions. Spock was also among the first pediatricians to draw on psychoanalysis to understand family dynamics and children’s emotional needs.
Beyond his medical career, Spock took an active role in social and political debates: he concentrated on activism against the Vietnam War, aligned with the New Left and ran for president in 1972 for the People’s Party, championing policies such as troop withdrawal and socioeconomic reforms. His authority on childcare provoked scientific and ethical controversy, including criticism for basing recommendations on clinical observation and for positions he later revised, such as guidance on infant sleep and circumcision.
His output includes dozens of books for parents and educators and a public profile that cemented his legacy—both as a central figure in cultural changes in parenting and as a subject of debate over scientific evidence in pediatrics.
