Bernard Baruch

Bernard Mannes Baruch was an American financier and political adviser whose career moved between Wall Street and the highest circles of power. A graduate of the City College of New York, he made his fortune young as a broker and independent businessman, becoming known as "the lone wolf of Wall Street" for his preference to operate on his own. His financial expertise earned him prestige with Democratic presidents and influence over national economic decisions.

Baruch held advisory roles at crucial moments of the twentieth century: he served as an economic adviser to the U.S. delegation at the Paris Peace Conference (1919) and counseled presidents such as Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt on financial policies and mobilization during crises. He was also active in debates about the future of the Middle East after the First World War, leading a Zionist delegation at the 1919 conference.

Beyond his financial and diplomatic career, Baruch entered the political lexicon by popularizing the phrase "Cold War" in 1947, characterizing the tense climate between the United States and the Soviet Union. His legacy combines the roles of economic influencer, political connector, and government adviser over decades.
