Bernard Bijvoet was a Dutch architect known for applying the principles of New Building and the New Objectivity. Trained in Delft, he began a creative partnership with Jan Duiker; together they won competitions and executed residential and social projects in the Netherlands, such as De Karenhuizen in Alkmaar and the Villadorp Kijkduin. The pair’s split in 1925 took Bijvoet to Paris, where he collaborated with Pierre Chareau on notable works—above all the Maison de verre—which established his international reputation more than his domestic output.
In the following decades he worked with figures such as Eugène Beaudouin and Marcel Lods and, after World War II, returned to the Netherlands to found a studio in Haarlem with Gerard Holt. Together they designed collective housing in several cities and specialized in theater acoustics, signing theaters in Tilburg, Nijmegen, and Tiel; he also participated in the design of the Okura tower-hotel in Amsterdam (completed 1968–1972).
Bijvoet’s work moves between technical modernity and attention to public and theatrical use, leaving a legacy in residential buildings, sanatoriums, and theaters. He received the Order of Orange-Nassau and continues to be cited in studies of modernist architecture and Franco–Dutch collaborations.
