Bernardo Bertolucci was an Italian filmmaker and screenwriter recognized as one of the central figures of modern European cinema. Trained in Rome, he began as a poet before moving into film, where he worked with Pier Paolo Pasolini and soon directed his first feature films, distinguishing himself with an authorial style that blends politics, intimacy and formal experimentation. His international recognition came with films such as The Conformist and Last Tango in Paris, titles that established his reputation as a provocative and sophisticated director. In 1976 he made 1900, an ambitious work of epic scale, and in the following decades he alternated between large-scale projects and intimate dramas, such as La Luna, Little Buddha and Stealing Beauty. The peak of his career came with The Last Emperor (1987), which earned him nine Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, and numerous international awards. Throughout his life he received multiple nominations and recognitions for screenwriting and directing. His work left a legacy of narrative and sensory daring, influencing generations of filmmakers and remaining the subject of study for its fusion of historical engagement and psychological subtlety.
