Bernhard Riemann was a German mathematician whose ideas reshaped analysis and differential geometry. Educated in Göttingen and Berlin, he earned his doctorate with a thesis on functions of a complex variable that introduced the notion of Riemann surfaces and deepened the Cauchy–Riemann equations, linking topology to function theory. His definition of the Riemann integral consolidated the concept of integrability and paved the way for later generalizations such as the Lebesgue integral, with significant impact on mathematical analysis and the foundations of theoretical physics. He published fundamental work on the distribution of prime numbers, including the 1859 paper that introduced the zeta function and the famous conjecture that bears his name. Riemann also contributed to the foundations of geometry; his lectures and writings on the assumptions underlying geometry directly influenced the development of differential geometry and were relevant to the formulation of relativity. His collected works, edited posthumously, remain essential reference and his legacy endures across many areas of modern mathematics.
