Bertrand Piccard is a Swiss psychiatrist and aeronaut, known for belonging to a family of explorers and inventors. Trained in medicine, he specialized in psychiatry, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy, worked in a psychiatric hospital and received academic distinction for his thesis. At the same time he developed experience in ultralight and hang-glider flying, becoming European hang-glider aerobatics champion in 1985. His international prominence, however, comes from ballooning: after taking part in transatlantic races, Piccard led the Breitling Project that culminated in 1999 with the Breitling Orbiter 3 — the first nonstop piloted flight around the world, flown by him and Brian Jones. The crossing set distance and duration records and earned Piccard multiple honors, including recognitions from scientific and humanitarian organizations. Beyond the expeditions, Piccard founded philanthropic and outreach initiatives, such as the Solar Impulse foundation, and devoted himself to lectures and books on exploration and technology. More recently he has focused on sustainable aviation projects, emphasizing solar-powered aircraft, continuing the family legacy of innovation and engineering challenges.
