Beverly Cleary (née Bunn) was an American writer best known for her children’s and young‑adult books, which have sold more than 91 million copies worldwide since 1950. Her work includes series and enduring characters such as Henry Huggins and his dog Ribsy, as well as the sisters Beezus and Ramona Quimby, who secured her place in the canon of American children's literature. Much of her fiction is set in the Grant Park neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, a setting drawn from her own childhood. Cleary was an early figure in portraying the emotional realism of middle‑class children, using everyday dialogue and situations that allowed young readers to identify genuinely with her characters.
