Bidhan Chandra Roy was an Indian physician, educator, philanthropist and statesman who rose to prominence as a political leader in West Bengal, serving as Chief Minister from 1950 until his death in 1962. Trained in medicine, he devoted himself to teaching and to organizing medical care, contributing to the founding of hospitals and educational institutions and serving as the first president of the Cardiological Society of India. His career combined clinical practice, teaching and public administration. He was also active in the nationalist movement, served as a friend and personal physician to Mahatma Gandhi and took part in politics as a member of the Congress and of the Working Committee. In municipal politics he was mayor of Calcutta (1931–1933), during which time he expanded public services such as free education, medical assistance, sanitation and street lighting. As head of the state government he confronted the post-Partition challenges of communal violence, refugee influx and economic crisis, and promoted urbanization and industrial and educational development projects. His achievements include founding planned towns such as Bidhannagar (Salt Lake), Kalyani and Durgapur, and supporting the establishment of the first IIT campus at Kharagpur. His contributions to medicine and public administration were recognized with the Bharat Ratna in 1961; his birth/death date, 1 July, is observed in India as National Doctors' Day.
