Bill Evans was an American pianist and composer whose work became a central reference for jazz piano after the 1950s. Trained in piano with a solid classical foundation, he became known for adopting harmonies of an impressionistic character and for a melodic, syncopated, and polyrhythmic phrasing that influenced generations of musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett. In the late 1950s he joined Miles Davis’s historic sextet and contributed to Kind of Blue (1959), an album of enormous commercial and artistic impact. At the same time he led highly regarded trios—especially the group with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian—whose live and studio recordings, such as Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Portrait in Jazz, are considered landmarks of the genre. His discography includes significant collaborations (Jim Hall, Claus Ogerman, Tony Bennett) and solo and trio albums that established a distinctive harmonic language often associated with influences like Debussy and Ravel. Despite health problems related to drug use that shortened his career, Evans left a lasting legacy as a technical and aesthetic model for jazz pianists.
