William Alton “Billy” Carter was a farmer, businessman, and public figure associated with a U.S. presidential family. He managed and was a partner in the family peanut business, increasing its turnover in the 1970s, and operated a gas station in Plains that became a local commercial hub and later an institutional memory. He promoted brands such as Peanut Lolita and a beer bearing his name, trading on his image as a Southern “good ol’ boy.”
Billy’s notoriety went beyond his business activities: controversial public behavior and episodes of alcoholism attracted press attention, leading to treatment and subsequent sobriety, and to involvement in community public activities — he unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Plains. In the late 1970s, his travels and ties to Libya prompted a Senate investigation and press coverage known as “Billygate,” an episode that affected his public profile.
He later faced financial difficulties, left his home county, and worked in the private sector until his premature death. His legacy combines local entrepreneurship, a controversial media presence, and a peripheral role in political controversies linked to the period.
