Billy Martin (Alfred Manuel Martin Jr.) was an American baseball player and manager, known for his combative style on and off the field. As the New York Yankees' second baseman in the 1950s, he became known for spectacular defensive plays and was the 1953 World Series MVP, contributing to the team’s championships. His playing career was disrupted by military service and disciplinary incidents that led to trades and eventually ended his time as an active player.

As a manager, Martin built a reputation for turning mediocre rosters into quick contenders: he led the Minnesota Twins to a division title in 1969, took the Detroit Tigers to the AL East title in 1972, and implemented an aggressive, offense‑oriented style—nicknamed “Billyball”—with the Oakland Athletics, securing another postseason berth in 1981. His most notable tenure was with the Yankees, whom he managed on five occasions, winning consecutive pennants (1976–77) and the 1977 World Series title.

Despite his successes, his managerial career was marked by conflicts with owners and star players, repeated firings, and a contentious temper that came to define his legacy: a manager who could improve teams while also generating intense controversy. He died in 1989 in a car accident.
