Billy Strayhorn was an American composer, arranger, pianist, and lyricist whose collaboration with Duke Ellington shaped nearly three decades of jazz history. Trained in classical music with rigorous piano instruction, Strayhorn moved into jazz and brought to Ellington’s orchestra a harmonic sophistication and melodic sensitivity that expanded the band’s repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are "Take the 'A' Train," which became the band's signature theme, as well as pieces such as "Chelsea Bridge," "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing," and "Lush Life." He worked both as an independent author and as a collaborator within the Ellington organization, sometimes receiving direct credit and sometimes signing works in partnership. Within the ensemble, Strayhorn was central to the arrangements and timbral innovations, frequently contributing to the so-called "band-within-a-band" concept and helping to develop major projects, such as sections of Black, Brown and Beige. Respected by colleagues for his pianistic virtuosity, he left a legacy of compositional refinement that influenced generations of musicians and helped define the aesthetic of Ellington’s orchestra during its golden era.
